Among Bellows more famous contributions to American imagery are his violent depictions of boxing matches. The dark palette, spontaneous-looking poses and sketchy brushwork enhance the physicality and giddy energy of the scene. Bellows himself said “the atmosphere around the fighters is a lot more immoral than the fighters themselves.”
